Toileting and Potty Training
Starting school or nursery is an exciting milestone, and developing independence with toileting is an important part of getting ready for this new stage. We understand that every child develops at their own pace, and we work closely with families to support children as they learn. Before starting school or nursery, we encourage parents and carers to begin potty training or toilet training so that children are becoming confident using the toilet independently. Ideally, children should be able to:
-
Tell an adult when they need the toilet
-
Use the toilet or potty with minimal support
-
Begin to manage clothing such as trousers or leggings
-
Wash and dry their hands afterwards
Accidents can still happen while children are learning, and staff will always support children in a calm and reassuring way. We recommend that children bring spare clothes in their bag each day just in case.
If a child is not yet toilet trained when they start, we will work with families to support them. Staff will manage the situation sensitively and appropriately while helping the child develop independence over time. In some cases, we may agree a simple support plan with parents or carers to help ensure a consistent approach between home and school.
Working Together
If you have any concerns about your child’s toileting or need support with toilet training, please speak to a member of staff. We are happy to work with families to support children during this stage of development.
For children with medical needs or additional needs, we will work with parents and carers to put appropriate support in place where needed.
